WASHINGTON — With the federal government grinding to a halt for the first time in nearly seven years, President Donald Trump is seizing the moment to swing the budget axe, floating deep cuts to Democratic-backed programs and warning of mass layoffs to purge what he calls bureaucratic “waste and fraud.”
The shutdown, now in its second day as of October 2, 2025, has turned Capitol Hill into a ghost town—thanks to a Yom Kippur break—but the real fireworks are set to erupt Friday, when Congress reconvenes to vote on dueling funding bills that could either end the stalemate or drag it out further.
Trump kicked off the chaos with a gleeful Truth Social post Wednesday, framing the impasse as a golden opportunity.
“Billions of Dollars can be saved,” he wrote, adding, “I can’t believe the Radical Left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity. They are not stupid people, so maybe this is their way of wanting to, quietly and quickly, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump Looks Toward Cutting Democrat Agencies

He’s already huddled with Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russ Vought to map out targets, musing about “which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends being cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent.
“The stakes hit home Thursday when the OMB slapped a hold on $18 billion in infrastructure funds for New York’s subway upgrades and Hudson Tunnel project—prime pet projects in the backyards of Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer.
Vought’s team cited the shutdown and “unconstitutional DEI principles” baked into the plans, but critics see it as pure political payback.
Schumer fired back on X, calling the block “stupid and counterproductive because they create tens of thousands of great jobs and are essential for a strong regional and national economy.” He didn’t stop there, labeling it “THIS IS A TRUMP SHUTDOWN” and accusing the president of holding Americans hostage, stating, “Donald Trump is saying he is using the American people as pawns, threatening pain on the country as blackmail.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt doubled down during a tense briefing, pinning the mess squarely on Democrats. “Sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do, and it’s because the Democrats have put us into this position,” she told reporters. “If the Democrats did not vote to shut down the government, we would not be standing up here talking about layoffs today.”
Those layoffs? They’re not idle threats—thousands of federal workers, from air traffic controllers to troops and janitors, are staring down furloughs, with more permanent pink slips on the horizon if the shutdown drags.
Vice President JD Vance Weighs In

Vice President JD Vance echoed the hardline vibe on Fox News, framing the fight as a battle for American priorities. “We believe that the American people’s government exists for the American people. That means the people who have the legal right to be here and that’s why we’re fighting to reopen the government,” he said. “And, unfortunately, the Democrats are fighting to shut it down for the benefit of illegal aliens.”
Democrats aren’t buying the narrative.
Jeffries and Schumer teamed up for a joint statement blasting the GOP’s tactics, stating, “After months of making life harder and more expensive, Donald Trump and Republicans have now shut down the federal government because they do not want to protect the healthcare of the American people.”
They held out an olive branch, adding, “Democrats remain ready to find a bipartisan path forward to reopen the government in a way that lowers costs and addresses the Republican healthcare crisis. But we need a credible partner.”
The Friday showdown pits two bills against each other: A Democratic measure packed with health care safeguards and a Republican stopgap to keep the lights on at current levels until late November. With Congress off for the Jewish holiday, the pause has given both sides time to dig in—Republicans eyeing the shutdown as leverage for their “clear out dead wood” agenda, Democrats decrying it as extortion over essential services.
This isn’t just Beltway brinkmanship; it’s hitting real people.
Furloughs could sideline up to a whopping 800,000 federal employees, grinding services from national parks to passport offices to a crawl.
Trump, ever the showman, sees it as a chance to “save billions,” but for families bracing for paycheck gaps, it’s anything but a win.
As the clock ticks toward Friday’s vote, one thing’s clear: Washington’s favorite game of chicken is back, and the American public is along for the bumpy ride.
