Marjorie Taylor Greene is Now Clashing with GOP on New Issue

Marjorie Taylor Greene raises questions about healthcare amid the government shutdown

WASHINGTON — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Georgia Republican and MAGA firebrand, is turning her fire on her own party amid the ongoing government shutdown, blasting GOP leadership for failing to address skyrocketing health insurance premiums and playing politics with vulnerable families’ lives.

In a series of pointed X posts Monday night, Greene demanded action on expiring Obamacare subsidies, even hinting at bipartisan solutions—a stance that’s put her at odds with the Trump administration and Senate Republicans.

The shutdown, now in its seventh day, stems from a partisan deadlock over funding, with Republicans tying border security demands to a continuing resolution while Democrats push for protections on healthcare subsidies set to expire by December’s end.

Without extension, average annual premiums could surge 114% in 2026 for lower-income families, a crisis Greene called “shameful, disgusting, and traitorous.”

Greene didn’t mince words in her posts, refusing to toe the party line. “No I’m not towing the party line on this, or playing loyalty games,” she wrote.

She accused Republican leaders of silence on the issue: “Not a single Republican in leadership talked to us about this or has given us a plan to help Americans deal with their health insurance premiums DOUBLING!!!”

MTG Takes it Personally

Greene, whose own adult children’s premiums are affected, expressed disgust at the system’s failures: “It is absolutely shameful, disgusting, and traitorous, that our laws and policies screw the American people so much that the government is shut down right now fighting over basic issues like this.”

Her frustration extends to broader GOP governance, echoing earlier criticisms of Senate Republicans for “playing games” instead of using the “nuclear option” to override the 60-vote filibuster rule and pass a clean continuing resolution.

“If Republican Senators wanted to pass the CR and reopen the government they could, by using the nuclear option to override the 60 vote rule and pass the CR with a simple majority vote,” she posted on X.

Greene urged her party to “learn how to wield power when they have it and govern,” spelling “wield” as “weld” in one post.

Greene’s shift marks a deepening rift with MAGA leadership.

Once a staunch Trump ally, she’s clashed with the administration over issues like Ukraine aid, COVID vaccines, and the Jeffrey Epstein files, where she’s one of few Republicans pushing for full release.

In August, she admitted, “I don’t know if the Republican Party is leaving me, or if I’m kind of not relating to the Republican Party as much anymore.”

Bipartisan Revolt Grows

Her shutdown stance aligns with Democrats’ calls to extend subsidies, though she clarified she’s “not a fan” of Obamacare, calling it “bullshit” and insurance a “scam.”

Democrats seized on her words. Rep. Greg Casar reposted her premium complaint with: “I don’t quote MTG often, but…”

The White House, via deputy press secretary Abigail Jackson, fired back: “The Democrats are holding the American people hostage with a government shutdown because they want free health care for illegal aliens.”

But the American people aren’t falling for it — there are more bipartisan efforts now than there ever has been.

While Democrats and Republicans might differ on some prominent views, some things are more than just ‘us vs. them’.

Greene’s office didn’t respond to comment requests.

Her discontent reflects GOP infighting as the shutdown drags on, furloughing 800,000 workers and freezing programs like WIC for low-income families.

With Senate Republicans rejecting dueling bills for the fourth time, Greene’s call for the nuclear option could pressure leadership.
